Flower Garden Mini Revised

The Flower Garden project started about a year ago as just a simple sketch. Raw edge applique is one of my favorite techniques and the one I've been doing the longest. When my kids were little I made hundreds of little applique shirts and onesies. I really wanted people to know just how simple and fun it could be if they gave it a try! And so, the first version of the Flower Garden Mini was born.

At first I started with just these two designs - one that showed how truly simple the project could be, and another that showed how you could explore new things and make something unique. But, the more I thought about the pieces in the pattern the more new ideas came to me on how to use them!

(Check out the original blog post with more photos and details here.)

For the next project, the Flower Garden Table Runner, I changed up the layout and the colors and just explored. This pattern for me has been a vehicle for learning how to free motion quilt. The time and money invested in the project before quilting starts is so minimal - just a few small pieces of solids and some Heat 'n Bond - so I don't feel the pressure to not mess up. I can truly explore and try new techniques. Plus, the projects have been the perfect manageable size to quilt on my home machine.

(More details and photos of the table runner here.)

The projects in our Flower Garden Mini pattern can be as simple or as detailed as you would like. I love the chance to encourage others to be creative - and this pattern is a great place to dip your toe into design. Start with our pattern pieces, but make up your own layout and color palette to make a truly unique piece.

After the table runner I was really excited to keep going and made the Christmas Wreath (more details and pics here). I had a blast quilting this piece. Wouldn't it be great with your family's name quilted into the center of the wreath?! What a great gift (to keep or give)!

The Newest Projects

I've created two more layouts using the Flower Garden Mini pattern, so we decided it was time to revise the pattern and include ALL of these options!

The Fern Pillow is the simplest layout. It has a nice organic feel. This pattern doesn't just have to be used on quilts, so we wanted to show that by making something useful like a pillow with this design.

We had so much fun with the Christmas Wreath Mini that we decided we needed a spring wreath! The Spring Garden Wreath still uses all of the original pattern pieces, in a whole new layout. Look close to find a few hidden extras in the quilting!

The updated Flower Garden Mini pattern has all the pattern pieces, layout guides and quilting inspiration to help you along the way. We hope you have a great time using the pattern and making the projects in your own way with new layouts, quilting, or hand embroidery!

The pattern is available in the shop, where you can see all of these projects in person. Or click over to our online shop and we would be happy to ship one out to you!

We've made kits of the Spring Wreath. Those are available online and in store while supplies last!

We can't wait to see what you create with this pattern. Please share your projects with us! You can email us, tag us using #mtsew or @moderntextiles on Instagram or Facebook.

Happy Sewing!
