Campfire Pillow Set - Free Tutorial!

The long awaited tutorial for the Campfire Pillow Set is finally here! We love it when you get excited about what we're making and can't wait to see your own campfire creations! Be sure to share them with us on social media using #moderntextiles! Stop in the store to purchase materials or buy the kit for the fire and two logs online HERE!

Supplies to make 2 logs:

2/3 yard Batting - We used Quilters Dream Fusion batting, but any batting scraps will work.

1/4 yard Breeze in Natural by Carolyn Friedlander

Brown Thread

Roxanne's Baste-It Glue

Stuffing - We used shredded foam from MAC's Hardware. It creates a nice, full log that retains it's shape well.

The following instructions are for one log.

Cut the brown solid fabric and the batting to 22-1/2" x 21".

cut one sheet of felt into bark-like strips (cut with the long edge of the felt to make the longest strips of back possible).

Using Roxanne's Baste-It glue, apply felt bark strips to the brown fabric. The bark should be applied parallel to the longest side.

Quilt through the felt strips.

Sew the long edges of the brown fabric together to create a tube. Leave a section of the center open for turning the log right side out and stuffing.

Next we will cut a circle for the log ends from the Breeze in Natural fabric (which just happens to look like tree rings!). Bear with me for just a bit of geometry here! The circumference of the end of the log is roughly 21". To find the diameter of a circle you take circumference / n. So in this case 21/n = 6.68. We want to add some seam allowance to that number, so I rounded up to 7.25". I used the Olfa Rotary Circle Cutter to cut perfect circles for my log ends. The Olfa Circle Cutter uses a small bad to cut the circle while the center point is held secure with a sharp point, similar to the way a compass works. The cutter is adjustable - you'll want to set it to the measurement of the radius of your circle (1/2 of the circumference) which is about 3.75".

Press the circles in half twice to find the 4 mid points.

Find the four mid points of one end of the log. Pin these points, right sides together. Continue to work around the circle, clipping the curve of the circle and pinning the two sides together. Once the circle is completely pinned and smooth, sew around the circle using a 1/2" seam allowance. Repeat for the opposite end of the log.

Turn the log right side out and stuff it. We preferred the shredded foam for this project because it keeps its shape well. It does make a bit of a mess though, so consider stuffing your logs outside or in a garage, etc. The shredded foam is available from MAC's Hardware. Poly-fill stuffing would also be great for this project.

Once stuffed, hand stitch the opening of the log using a blind stitch or ladder stitch.

Now, onto the fire!

Supplies needed to make one (double-sided) fire pillow:

1/2 yard Bella Solids Christmas Red fabric

2 sheets Hallow's Eve Wool Felt

2 sheets Mac-n-Cheese Wool Felt

Coordinating thread to top stitch

Stuffing and/or rice

Print the Campfire Pillow Pattern. Scale the pattern to 90% before you print. Cut the paper shapes out and tape the top pieces to the bottom pieces for Layers 1, 2 and 3 before you cut out the felt. Each layer's pattern should be cut out on the fold. Cut two of each piece. Layer 1 is cut from Mac-n-Cheese felt, layer 2 from Hallow's Eve felt and layer 3 from the Christmas Red fabric.

Position one of Layer 1 onto one of Layer 2 and top stitch in place. Position Layer 2 onto the fabric and top stitch in place. Repeat for second pieces of each layer which will be the back of the fire.

Place completed fire pieces right sides together and stitch around the fire using a 1/2" seam allowance. Leave a section of the bottom open to turn the fire. Clip deep into each "V" shaped corner.

Turn right side out and stuff. We put stuffing in the top portion, then finished the bottom off with rice to help the fire stand up. Blind stitch or ladder stitch the pillow shut and enjoy!

The Campfire Pillow set goes great with our Play Day Tent! Stop in the shop to pick up a tent kit an show us your campfires!
